  8.             A few tips on getting the most out of BIBL / NET
  9.  
  10.   o  BIBL / NET offers five levels of security. Summarized
  11.      briefly, they are:
  12.  
  13.      Level 0: read-only access. No export
  14.      Level 1: Read Only access. Limited export
  15.      Level 2: Add records to public databases. No edit/delete
  16.      Level 3: Add records. Edit/Delete records user creates.
  17.               Level 3 and above users may create personal
  18.               databases that are placed in their Export
  19.               directory. Level 3 and above users have all
  20.               rights in their personal databases.
  21.      Level 4: Add/Edit/Delete any records in any public database
  22.      Level 5: Unlimited access. Create/delete databases. Rebuild
  23.               Indexes if necessary.

  25.   o  You can change your password and/or export directory via
  26.      the User Information option under Maintenance. Note that
  27.      if you change your export directory, your personal datbase(s)
  28.      will have to be moved to that new directory or BIBL/NET
  29.      won't know they exist!

  31.   o  If you have several databases, give the one you use most often
  32.      a name that sorts first in the list of your databases...that
  33.      will cause that database to display first in your selection
  34.      pick-list and can be activated by simply pressing RETURN
  35.      (or hitting escape).

  37.   o  Be sure to put a hyphen between terms used in your descriptor
  38.      field.  BIBL considers anything with a space on either side
  39.      of it a 'word' when indexing. BIBL will index up to 9 'words'
  40.      in the descriptor field.

  42.   o  If you have a mouse, you can close this screen by clicking
  43.      on the small box in the upper left corner. Clicking on the
  44.      'scroll bars' will move through this file.  The same is
  45.      true for the internal file viewer (V on the Main Menu).

  47.   o  Enter data into your records just as you'd like it to appear
  48.      in subsequent export files (e.g., enter Smith, John A. for the
  49.      author, not John A. Smith).
  50.  
  51.   o  Data is stored in UPPER CASE in the various BIBL index files,
  52.      but you may use any case when entering search requests. Your
  53.      input is converted to upper case before comparison with the
  54.      index is made.
  55.  
  56.   o  If you should experience a problem with a particular database,
  57.      run the BRX program to rebuild the file.
  58.  
  59.   o  You can use the LABELLED OUTPUT option (under EXPORT) to backup
  60.      your database and the ASCII Import function to read it back
  61.      into your database. Since the labelled output file contains
  62.      only the data in each field (not the extra spaces or the empty
  63.      fields), the file is often 50% smaller than your *.DAT file.
  64.  
  65.   o  When you want to transfer records from one database to
  66.      another you can use the 'T' (for Transfer) option when
  67.      the record you want to move displays. This writes a
  68.      copy of the record to the ASCII file, TRANSFER.BIX.
  69.      (the BIX extension stands for BIBL Import/eXport).
  70.      Each time you press 'T' the record displaying is
  71.      ADDED to the TRANSFER.BIX file.  When you have put all
  72.      the things you want to move into TRANSFER.BIX, use
  73.      ASCII Import to read these records into another database.

  75.      Tip: If you want to move a lot of records that have
  76.      something in common, use the [F]ull search option on the
  77.      search menu. Then you can move through the matches by
  78.      pressing F or B and transfer the desired records by
  79.      pressing T when they display.

  93.      this file.  Just be sure to create the file using an ASCII
  94.      word processor (e.g., a programming editor like QEDIT).
